The Conservative Council Leader has refused a challenge from Liberal Democrat councillors to guarantee that the cost of the new Civic will not rise above £20 million. The dispute arose following Conservative complaints about an article in a current Lib Dem publication, 'News Extra', which reports fears from local experts about a possible massive rise in the cost of the new Civic to £25 million, or even £30 million.

Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Fiona White dismissed as 'nonsense' calls from the Conservatives that 'News Extra' should be withdrawn. Cllr White said "By refusing to guarantee the cost will not overrun, the Conservatives have validated the concerns expressed by local businessmen that the cost of the new Civic could rise to £30 million. If they are so confident that the business men are wrong, why not put their money where their mouth is and offer to personally underwrite any overrun in costs?"
