Much-needed action on town centre parking chaos has been delayed by the Conservative Executive on the Council.

The Lib Dems put forward a plan so that new developments will not be able to add to parking problems. It was accepted by a Council committee but then rejected by the Conservative Executive.

Instead, CPZ issues will form part of a report by council officers, delaying the process.

Under the Lib Dem plans, new developments would not be allowed on-street parking permits - meaning developers have to provide enough on-site parking.

Cllr Caroline Reeves said, "Our plan would protect parking spaces for existing residents who have no option but to park on the already crowded streets."

Cllr David Goodwin said, "We have been campaigning for these changes for some time and are disappointed to see them delayed. We need to take action now on town centre parking ."

Sue Doughty added, "Planners assume that town centre residents do not need a car, but as we know this is often not the case."
