Honorary Aldermen Proposals Should Be Carefully Considered, Not Rubber-Stamped

The Liberal Democrat group at Guildford Borough Council has called for civic honours to command broad community and cross-party support after a proposal to confer Honorary Aldermen status on seven former councillors did not proceed.

While recognizing that nominees met formal eligibility criteria and had dedicated decades of public service to Guildford, the group emphasised that conferring one of the council's highest civic honours must recognise an enduring positive legacy shared across the entire community.

The title of Honorary Alderman is a significant civic distinction intended to honour eminent service. However, several nominees remain closely associated with contentious historical decisions - including controversial policies relating to the Local Plan, major housing allocations, and strategic governance - where residents hold legitimate ongoing concerns.

Commenting on the vote, a Guildford Liberal Democrat Spokesperson said:

"Civic honours should never be a routine administrative exercise or a rubber-stamping process. While we fully acknowledge the long public service of former councillors, Honorary Aldermen must be individuals whose contributions command broad and lasting respect across our entire borough.

"As Liberal Democrats, we believe in putting residents first and ensuring our civic institutions uphold the highest standards. We will now work collaboratively with councillors from across the political spectrum to submit a revised list of nominees that reflects genuine cross-party consensus at the next council meeting."

The Liberal Democrat group confirmed it remains committed to recognising distinguished public service through a transparent process that unites the council and the borough.
