Guildford Borough Council, under Lib-Dem leadership, are proud to launch a new discounted parking permit scheme to support the workers who keep our town centre buzzing after dark.

Starting in June 2025, employees working in Guildford’s night-time economy, including in our pubs, clubs and restaurants, will be eligible to purchase low-cost parking permits, allowing them to park between 3pm and 7am, seven days a week. This initiative reflects a key step in delivering our vision for a Greener, Fairer, Thriving Guildford – a pledge we made to residents in our May 2023 local election manifesto.

Partnership for Progress

Developed in close partnership with Experience Guildford, which champions local businesses, the scheme is designed to address the needs of late-night and early-morning workers, many of whom face limited public transport options around their shifts.

The council is initially offering 100 annual permits at a significantly reduced trial price of £150, valid through to May 2026. If the trial proves successful, the scheme may be extended.

A Safer, Fairer Town for All

Cllr Catherine Houston, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Commercial Services, commented:

“We’re taking meaningful steps to back our town’s night-time economy. By offering affordable parking, we’re ensuring that those working unsociable hours feel safer and better supported. It’s about creating a fairer Guildford and a thriving Guildford for everyone.”

Permits are applied for by businesses on behalf of their employees and are linked to individual vehicle registration numbers. Permit holders will have access to eight central car parks:

  • Bedford Road Multi-Storey
  • Bedford Road Surface
  • Bright Hill
  • G Live
  • High Street
  • Leapale Road
  • Mary Road
  • Millbrook

Backing Our Local Economy

Zöe Franklin, Lib Dem MP for Guildford, added:

“I’m delighted that my colleagues at the council are continuing to work closely with local partners to support businesses and ease recruitment for night-time roles. A cheap parking option for night-time workers who are often among the lowest paid, is the fair and right thing to do. A fairer and thriving Guildford is what local Liberal Democrats stand for.”

This scheme is a tangible example of the Lib Dem commitment to practical policies that put people first and make Guildford a better place to live, work and visit.
